Over the summer, primary level teachers attended a one week math textbook training. During this training, teachers were introduced to the new textbook ‘Math In Focus.’ The previous math textbook was used since 2007. Unlike the previous textbook, ‘Math In Focus’ shows what students learned previous grade and what they should learn in their current grade. The summer training allowed participants to familiarize themselves with the new text. It also allowed teachers to explore new concepts such as Singapore Math and bar models. With the new textbook at hand and start of the new school year, CIA Math Specialists (Chizuko Matsumoto, Sweeny Term, and Daishiro Taniguchi) visited schools to see if there are any questions or concerns regarding the new textbook. In this workshop, participants were given a revision of the annual scheme. They discussed how to plan each chapter, resources for Math In Focus, and classroom lesson preparation.
